Cayuga Community College to Stage Aquarium

DATE: 03-25-2004

Harlequin Productions of Cayuga Community College will present the area premiere of Joe Dennison's Aquarium, directed by Bob Frame. The play will be staged Thursday through Saturday, March 25?27 and April 1?3, at 8:00 p.m. in the college theatre. Tickets are $1 for students and $4 for the general public.

In a series of vignettes linked by Susan Key's voicing of the PA Announcer's role, characters seem to inhabit an aquarium?a metaphor for a netherworld of madness and absurdity. The opening and closing scenes feature actors Jason Chiaschi and Michael Engler, first as thespians rehearsing their roles in Beckett's Waiting for Godot, then closing the show with a comic epilogue.

etween those bookends, Brian Chalupniki and Courtney L. Novak appear in Goon as two prisoners in a futuristic co-ed maximum security prison where inmates are “guests.” Rebecca Murray and Lynn Boyle appear in Time as sisters meeting in a psychiatric ward to sort out their lives without alcohol, cigarettes, or pretzels. Smile, set in a hospital, presents Adam Smith an amnesiac and Keri Duckett his new, no-nonsense acquaintance.

At the annual Statewide Theatre Festival of the Theatre Association of New York State last November, cast member Engler received the 2003 Excellence in Acting Award for his portrayal of Hansel in Chuckling in Limbo. Harlequin Productions? Undertones won the 2003 Best Alternate Short Production Award at the festival.
