The college's fall 2004 visiting writer, Saunders has published two acclaimed collections of darkly comic stories. He has also written a children's book and is now at work on a screenplay, at the request of comic actor and producer Ben Stiller. The title story of Saunders' first book, CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, spurred Stiller to visit Syracuse to ask the author for a film adaptation. Saunders teaches in the graduate creative writing program at Syracuse University. He has also explored for oil in Sumatra, played guitar in a Texas bar band, and worked in a slaughterhouse.
The reading, set for 11:00 a.m. in the student lounge, is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the college's humanities division. Saunders' books will be available for purchase and signing after the reading.
