College's Early Childhood Club Wins Funds to Create Fun

DATE: 12-10-2004

The Early Childhood Club at Cayuga Community College has received one of five mini-grants from the New York State Association for the Education of Young Children.

The grant provides $498 for club members to create a "Fun on the Run" project for child care providers in Cayuga County. Directed by Patricia Gridley, assistant professor of early childhood at the college, members of the student club will design six themed learning activities and package the necessary materials in Fun on the Run bags. Using these prepared kits, preschoolers and their teachers can use puzzles, puppets, audiotapes, and handcrafts to explore shapes, bugs, transportation, farms, the sea, and colorful books by Eric Carle.

The students will visit local child care settings to provide the kits, explain their use, and rotate the themes among providers. The grant funding expires July 31, 2005, but Gridley, the club's faculty adviser, plans to continue the project in the future as an ongoing program.
