Announcing the award, College president Dennis Golladay noted that the criteria include consistent excellence in teaching and professional service, as well as outstanding contributions to the College. Keeler, who joined the Cayuga faculty in September 1987, has been instrumental in developing recording, production, and broadcasting facilities for radio and television degree programs. College students operate a radio station, WDWN-FM89, and produce television shows for local-access cable broadcast.
A graduate of SUNY at Buffalo with a master's degree from Syracuse University, Keeler received the 2000 SUNY Chancellor's Award of Excellence in Professional Service. In 2000 and 2004, he was named National Broadcast Educator of the Year by the Society of Broadcast Engineers.
