Cayuga CC Stage Drama Wins Statewide Awards

DATE: 11-30-2006

One of four one-act plays staged this fall by Cayuga Community College's Harlequin Productions has gone on to win awards at the annual festival of the Theater Association of New York State.

Fourteen Cayuga students and alumni, along with director Robert Frame, attended the TANYS festival, held November 17?19 in Glens Falls. They presented Lena's Secret Garden, a drama by Ken Tesoriere and one of eight plays chosen from statewide entrants, as the festival's closing performance.

Garden featured Cayuga graduate Carole Estabrook and student Joe Pine. Honors won by the show included Outstanding Performance Awards for Estabrook and Pine, a Festival Favorite (audience choice) Performance Award for Estabrook, and the J. Richard Mahlstedt Award for Best Director for Frame.

Other Cayuga actors received awards at the festival for recent local productions seen by TANYS reviewers. Merit Awards for performances in Stray Dogs and Jake's Women went to Estabrook, Pine, Frame, and alumnae Elizabeth Estabrook and Kristy Wilt Volmer. Cayuga graduate Tom Woods received a Regional Service Award for his online newsletter publicizing local theatre events.

Over the past nine years, six Harlequin shows have been invited to appear at TANYS festivals.
