Wife, mother, and entrepreneur Shelly Crawford of Sterling, N.Y., was sending two children to college when she decided that she could benefit from some formal business education. So after 23 years away from a classroom, Crawford enrolled in Cayuga Community College to pursue an associates’ degree in business administration in fall 2010.
“I have learned a lot about accounting and using computers,” said Crawford, who runs Crawford Auto Transport LLC with her husband, Scott. “But what’s been even more exciting is realizing that I can still learn. When you’re a mother and wife and a business owner, you get caught up in the day to day, and it’s been nice to discover that I still know how to learn.”
Crawford was one of the two students at the Cayuga Community College Fulton Campus selected to receive the first-ever Eastern Shore Associates Commencement Award and Scholarship. Eastern Shore Associates Chief Executive Officer Robert K. Wallace congratulated Crawford and fellow winner Kyle Lawton ’11 of Oswego during a presentation May 12 at the Fulton Campus, 806 W. Broadway St.
Lawton, a business administration major, received the $1,000 Eastern Shore Associates Commencement Award. He said he will use the award to help pay for the books he will need when he enters the business management bachelor’s degree program at SUNY Buffalo in the fall.
Sterling, who is finishing her first year in the program, expects to use her $1,000 Eastern Shore Associates Scholarship to help cover her educational expenses next semester at Cayuga Community College.
“We are so grateful for the support of Eastern Shore Associates,” said College President Daniel P. Larson. “These awards enable our students to continue to pursue their educational and career goals, and remind them that their success contributes to the successful future of the whole community.”
Eastern Shore Associates, a Fulton-based insurance company, established the awards to recognize students who attend the Fulton Campus, with special consideration given to a graduate entering the Insurance and Risk Management program at SUNY Oswego; or if no graduating student is entering the program, then it’s given to a graduate pursuing a business-related degree at a four-year college or university.
“Eastern Shore is delighted to have the opportunity to recognize these students for their academic success and we look forward to many years of partnership with CCC,” said Wallace, who serves on the College Foundation Board of Directors.
