CCC Tutor Club Seeks Donations of Gently Used Prom Dresses

DATE: 06-16-2011

As the academic year winds down and prom season has passed, Cayuga Community College Tutor Club invites you to clean out your closet and donate any semi-formal and formal dresses in good condition. The club will hold a collection from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, June 24 in the Student Lounge on  the Auburn Campus, 197 Franklin St. Dresses can also be dropped off during the same time period at the Fulton Campus, 806 W. Broadway.

All dresses collected will support the “Gorgeous Gowns, Second Time Around” Prom Dress Project, led by the Cayuga Tutor Club. Every spring, the club sells gently used prom dresses to area high school girls at a low cost, ranging from free to $30. The club then donates any money raised to assist local charities and community organizations.

“Coming from a small town myself, I know many classmates who were unable to buy a nice dress or attend our prom due to the high costs involved,” said Auburn Campus Tutor Club President Bethany Nelson. “I thought that the ‘Gorgeous Gowns Second Time Around’ project was a way I could personally aid those who were in that situation and be a part of giving every girl a chance to look like a princess and go to her prom for a price that fits her budget.

“It is very important to keep this project alive, especially here at the community college, because it brings the community together,” Nelson said. “As the community donates their dresses and helps support our event, we as a club are able to return the favor by donating our proceeds to a local charity as well as give many teenage girls the opportunity to attend their high school prom in a gown bought at an affordable price.”

The Prom Dress Project received funding to purchase the hanging racks for the dresses from the Kauffman Foundation-supported Enitiative, a coalition of committed academic and community partners to incorporate entrepreneurship throughout Central New York.

For those people who cannot make the June 24 drop-off event, individuals can make arrangements to drop off at another time by contacting Bethany Nelson at bnelson3@cayuga-cc.edu in Auburn and Michelle McGrath at michelle.mcgrath@cayuga-cc.edu or 315-294-9027.
