Prom may be a distant memory for some, but for most local high school girls this spring will bring one of the most special nights of their lives. Members of Cayuga Community College's Auburn Campus Tutor Club have been working diligently for the last year on a project that will help make some of those girls' dreams come true. The 3rd annual Prom Dress Project sale will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3 and Sunday March 4 in the Student Lounge at CCC's Auburn Campus, 197 Franklin St. Auburn, NY 13021. Dresses will be priced from $15 to $35, and Tutor Club invites any girl in need of a formal gown to join them for this fun and charitable event.
"I really hope that the girls will find not only the dress of their prom dreams but also the chance to see what an awesome school CCC is," said Tutor Club President Bethany Nelson. "I hope they not only stop in to buy their dress and leave, but that they have a fun time trying on a lot of them and talking with the tutors, and walk away feeling good about the Prom Dress Project and maybe spreading the word for us to their friends and families."
"I hope that with all the reaching out to high schools and the community, that we are able to get a good turnout...Last year a snowstorm prevented a lot of customers from coming to our sale, so I am hoping for the weather to stay nice and that a lot of people who come check out this wonderful project," Nelson added. "When it comes down to it, the girls buying the dresses are not only getting help to go to prom, but they are helping us help others."
The Prom Dress Project is first aimed at helping local high school girls find a modestly-priced, gorgeous dress for prom, but it does not stop there. All of the proceeds from the sale are donated back into the community to a charity of Tutor Club's choice—this year, Tutor Club is donating to AIDS Community Resources. In its three-year history, Prom Dress Project has collected more than 500 dresses and sold over half of them, which translates to more than $4,000.00 donated to such organizations as UNICEF, The Salvation Army, Lunches With Love, and local food pantries.
