Hilary Corna, the author of One White Face, will present “Create Your Own Opportunity and Embrace Your Potential – I Dare You” at 9 a.m. Friday, October 19 in the Cayuga Community College Irene A. Bisgrove Community Theatre, 197 Franklin St., Auburn. She will speak at 12:30 p.m. on the College’s Fulton Campus in the Admissions Presentation Room (167). Both events are free and open to the public. At each location, two copies of One White Face will be given away, and the book will also be available for purchase.
At 22 years of age, Corna graduated from Elon University in North Carolina with a B.S. in International Business and a B.A. in Asian-Pacific Studies, with a minor in Japanese. Rather than accept any of the many job offers she had in the United States, she decided to sell her Jeep and buy a one-way ticket to Singapore. She gave herself two months to find a job or return home. Soon, she was a senior executive officer at Toyota Motor Asia-Pacific, where she taught Kaisen, a Japanese management technique, to Toyota executives in six countries. One executive pointed out to Corna that she was the “one white face” in the company, where she was also the only female executive. Her book tells the story of her adventurous decision to follow her intuition and dare to be different.
“It is such a wonderful honor to have her come to campus and share her experiences,” said Emily Cameron, who works in the International Office at Cayuga. “We wish every student could participate in global education of some kind. Everybody will gain insight from her presentation – those who have studied abroad, as well as those who haven’t.” Cayuga is one of seven SUNY colleges that will host Corna between October 17th and October 24th as part of a year-long tour of U.S. colleges and high schools.
Corna’s nationwide tour is being partially sponsored by Toyota Motor USA. Her visit to CCC is sponsored by the Travel Studies Program, which offers CCC students two opportunities to study abroad. The International Travel Study trip to London departs on January 2, 2013 and returns on January 15. Up to 100 students can take part in the London trip, and it is usually full, according to Cameron. In addition, an International Travel Study trip to India is being planned. Up to 10 students will be able to participate in the India trip.
Corna, SUNY’s current Author in Residence, kept this Helen Keller quote on her desk for the three years when she was a senior executive officer at Toyota Motor Asia-Pacific: “Life is a daring adventure or nothing at all.” Cameron hopes that Corna’s presentation will inspire people to have the courage to reach for adventure, and have the confidence to take the risk to go abroad and be immersed in another culture.
