Cayuga Community College will recognize 630 graduates during its Commencement ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 19 in Spartan Hall, 197 Franklin St.
The Commencement addresses will be delivered by two members of the Class of 2013 who are SUNY Chancellor Award for Student Excellence recipients: Catherine Faith Fanning of Waterloo and Brian M. Knapp of Fleming.
Fanning will graduate with an associate’s degree in Liberal Arts: Humanities and Social Science, and in the fall, she will transfer to Hobart and William Smith Colleges as a double major in English and Writing and Rhetoric.
Knapp, a 2005 graduate of Union Springs Central High School and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, will graduate with an associate’s degree in Geographic Information Systems. Upon graduation, Knapp will begin in his new position as Veterans Outreach Coordinator with U.S. Congressman Dan Maffei’s Office.
Leading the academic procession is Mace Bearer and Grand Marshal Judith G. Miladin, director of financial aid; College Marshals William Lovell, Fulton Campus accounting professor and division chair, and Susan Wolstenholme, Auburn Campus English professor, will lead the faculty and staff; and leading the Class of 2013 are Class Marshals Philip F. DeCicca of Auburn, Phi Theta Kappa graduate in studio art and design, and Dawn A. Varney of Altmar, a Phi Theta Kappa graduate in business administration. The Syracuse Scottish Pipe Band will open the procession.
During the ceremony, the College will recognize the following three employees with SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for:
- Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities—Daniel F. Schultz, Social Sciences Professor
- Excellence in Classified Service—Robert Szczepanski ’77, Custodial Service Staff
- Excellence in Teaching—Shannon Lavey Reohr, Math Professor
Alumni Michael R. Frame ’99, director of federal relations for SUNY and Binghamton University, and Patricia M. Callahan ’87, a Literacy Volunteer and College donor, will receive the Alumni Association Award for their outstanding contributions.
In collaboration with our peer schools in the Veteran Regional Consortium, the College will recognize its U.S Armed Forces veteran graduates with red, white, and blue cords. The six participating CNY colleges have extended invitations to the more than 235 graduating veterans, including 33 at Cayuga, to wear the special cords at their respective Commencement ceremonies in the coming weeks.
The ceremony is open to the friends and family of the graduates as well as the general public. Tickets are not necessary for general seating.
