Student Veterans Raise Money to Help Military Service Members

Members of the Cayuga Community College Veterans Club spent the last semester raising money to help their comrades. In a ceremony at the College’s Fulton Campus, the student organization’s leadership team presented a check for $1,000 to Peter Allen, the founder and Executive Director of the Thank a Service Member Charity, a local organization whose mission is to “honor the service and support the needs” of military veterans.

“I am astounded by the efforts of this group,” said Peter Allen. “We sincerely appreciate this generous donation. These monies will go a long way in helping us to recognize and assist military veterans in our community—and with the holiday season upon us, the timing could not be better.”

The money will be used to support the charity’s “Military Appreciation Campaign,” a program designed to honor our veterans in VA Hospitals, in long-term care facilities, and at scheduled community events. Through this program, the charity also conducts welcome home events for returning service members.

The Cayuga Community College Veterans Club is represented on both the Auburn and Fulton campuses, and membership is open to all military veterans. Their mission is to assist student veterans at Cayuga in successfully transitioning from military service to college life through camaraderie, networking, and advocacy.

Thank a Service Member is a non-profit organization based in Oswego, New York. It was founded in 2006 as a grassroots initiative. Thank a Service Member’s mission is to educate the public and to support and show appreciation to the men and women who have served the country. Its programs provide creative solutions to the problems faced by active duty military members, veterans, and their families, through its non-political and non-partisan campaigns.
