Theatre at Cayuga is Alive and Vital

The Auburn Campus features two different performance spaces; the Irene A. Bisgrove Community Theatre and the Black Box Theatre. Harlequin Productions is the award-winning performing company where students can experience every facet of producing live theatre. In addition to Harlequin's two productions a year there is an active theatre scene in the Auburn community where students can increase and further hone their skills. Finally, there is a Liberal Arts Theatre Concentration. Theatre students graduating from Cayuga can transfer to Lemoyne or Wells Colleges and be accepted with junior status.

Bisgrove Theatre

The 424 seat Bisgrove Theatre was completely renovated in 2007. This air-conditioned proscenium stage features large comfortable seats with wireless internet, an IGBT dimmer per circuit lighting system with moving lights and scrollers, an updated sound system and a 15x20 screen with a projection system which has the capabilities for Power Point presentations, Internet interactivity or just showing movies. While great care was taken during the renovation to not harm the wonderfully acoustics of the space, an infrared system is available to help the hearing impaired. The Bisgrove theatre hosts many and varied performances during a year. Companies which produce concerts, lectures, dance and of course live theatre are all comfortable in this space. It is a good "little theatre" which is available for rental by non-profit groups. Like the Auburn Players Community Theatre and the Absolute Dance Company.

Black Box Theatre

The Black Box Theatre was built in 1982. It is a 21' by 50' space which is designed to be flexible in its use. Much of the time the Black Box serves as a cross over and green room for the main stage but many productions in various formats have been produced in this space over the years. End stage, 3/4 thrust, alley and in-the round are example of how the space has been used for live theatre and acoustic performances. A Harlequin Production performance is staged here at least every other year to give the students a taste of performing in an intimate environment. Depending upon the staging, seating can be built to hold 40 - 75 people.

Harlequin Productions

Harlequin Productions

Harlequin Productions is the award winning body that produces live theatre on campus. Students are the actors and tech staff with professional designers and directors brought in to guide them. Standards are high as Harlequin Productions specializes in new works, providing students the opportunity to create pieces of theatre that have never been seen before while having fun in a positive educational environment! The works tend to be edgy and provocative by playwrights from across the country. Over the years many playwrights have even traveled to Auburn to see their plays performed. Usually there is one play per semester that runs for 6 performances over two weekends. Open to all students, with or without experience. Harlequin is a member of the Theatre Association of New York which provides adjudication services for their productions.
