INTERLIBRARY LOAN POLICY

Interlibrary loan (ILL) services support the mission of Cayuga Community College Library by providing enhanced access to and delivery of research and instructional materials to Cayuga’s students and staff. The purpose of ILL is to obtain materials that are not available in Cayuga’s Library for Cayuga students and employees, and to make materials in Cayuga’s collections available to patrons from other libraries.

BORROWING

Borrowing materials owned by other libraries is available to patrons who are registered as students, faculty, staff, alumni, and Empire State College students. Patrons in these groups may initiate up to three (3) ILL requests one time. Community users and SUNY Open Access patrons are asked to use their local public libraries or educational institutions to request materials through interlibrary loan.

To request an item through interlibrary loan, patrons must establish an ILLiad account using a valid Cayuga Community College library card and a personal email address. The Library’s web page provides a link to the ILLiad service with instructions to set up user accounts.

Each lending library establishes its own interlibrary loan policy addressing what items will be loaned and terms of loans. Most ILL requests are filled free of charge. If a lending library indicates that there will be charges for borrowing their materials, the patron will be informed of the dollar amount and procedure for payment before deciding to proceed with the request.

Patrons should allow two (2) weeks for requested materials to arrive, although requests often are filled more quickly. Patrons will be contacted when items are ready to be picked up.

Borrowed materials should be picked up at the library circulation desk at either the Auburn or Fulton campus. Books must be returned to the circulation desk or in the book drop. Photocopies may be kept by the patron.

Renewal of borrowed materials is sometimes possible; however, the lending library reserves the right to decline a renewal request. Requests must be made five (5) days before an item is due to be returned. Overdue materials may be denied renewal. If an item is overdue, fines may accrue at one dollar ($1.00) per day.

Lost items must be paid for by the borrower at an amount specified by the lending institution, which may include the replacement cost of the book and additional processing fees. If the lending library does not establish a replacement charge, Cayuga’s replacement charge policy will be used. Cayuga follows United Stated Copyright Law for all interlibrary loan requests.

LENDING

Many materials in the Cayuga Community College Library collection are available to be loaned to other libraries. Interlibrary loan requests must originate from the borrowing library. Cayuga accepts requests via ILLiad lending forms and ALA forms (mail, fax, and email). Borrowing libraries must include all contact information, including the title and ILL number of the item. Materials are loaned for 30 days. One renewal is allowed if the item is not on hold for a Cayuga patron.

The following materials are available for lending: circulating monographs and serials, and music CDs.

The following materials generally are not available for lending: periodicals, newspapers, reference books, local history materials, reserve items, microforms, audiobooks, DVDs, or materials that the Library does not own outright, such as items in the McNaughton best seller collection.

Cayuga Community College does not charge for interlibrary loan. Replacement charges for lost or damaged items are determined by library policy, and will include a $5.00 (five dollar) processing fee.

Cayuga adheres to regional, state, and national resource sharing standards.
