Student Showcase: Jorge Jimenez

For Jorge Jimenez, coming to Cayuga was the right choice at the right time.

He had tried college previously, but after a change in his living situation he found it challenging to simultaneously attend school and work. But after taking some time away and connecting with Cayuga Coach Tony Borges, he decided it was the right moment to try college again.

The freshman arrived at Cayuga this summer determined to hit the ground running as a Sports Management major and a guard on the Men’s Basketball team. Two months into his time at the College and with the first regular season game less than two weeks away, he knows he’s landed at the right place.

“Attending college here and playing for Coach Borges is the perfect opportunity. With the smaller classes here, it’s easier to connect with your professors and build those relationships,” said Jorge.

Along with the small class sizes, Jorge is enjoying the Educational Opportunity Program at Cayuga. Designed to encourage students who show academic promise, the program provides students with support and resources. He meets regularly with EOP Director Debra Joseph-McEwen to discuss his work at Cayuga and life in general.

“Debra is a tremendous resource for all of us. She’s supportive, believes in us but also holds us to a certain standard,” he said.

Previously interested in a computer-related degree, Jorge switched directions at Cayuga. He started studying Sports Management, particularly the research aspect of the program and the role nutrition plays in helping athletes develop.

“I always had an interest in the coaching side of Sports Management, but over the summer I talked with a Division I college player. He talked about nutrition, and how important it is to take care of your body and your health,” said Jorge. “That really made me take notice of it, both for myself and as a degree and career option.”

Though he’s just started at Cayuga, Jorge is already looking ahead. He’s determined to achieve a 3.5 GPA during his time at the College, and once he earns his degree he’s interested in transferring to a four-year school where he can continue competing on the court as well.
